Some travelers don’t just visit — they become part of the story.
That’s “Tan” Hector and Dorothy — or Dorrie, as she’s affectionately known — our adventurous duo who somehow turn every destination into a comedy of travel miracles, misadventures, and magic.
November 2019: Meeting Hector and Dorrie — The Angkor Wat Sunrise Adventure
Our story began in November 2019, just days after I’d had a small surgery. I was still walking like a penguin testing out its sea legs when I met Hector and Dorrie for the first time.
On our second morning, after a wonderfully slow (and doctor-approved) first day full of photo opportunities, we set out to catch the sunrise at Angkor Wat. Picture this: I’m limping along with heroic determination, while Hector charges ahead like he’s on assignment for National Geographic, determined to secure the ultimate sunrise shot. I trailed behind, flapping and wobbling like a slightly confused flamingo in flip-flops. Meanwhile, Dorothy, ever the calm and collected one, stayed nearby—half guide, half guardian angel—making sure I didn’t trip over an ancient stone or my own ambition.
That chaotic sunrise perfectly set the tone for what would become three unforgettable days exploring Angkor’s temples, monasteries, artisans, lively markets, and golden rice fields.
Apparently, they had an amazing time — Dorrie even wrote about it in her blog. But what really stayed with me was their kindness, humor, and genuine curiosity for local life.
And then, six years later (this September), during another visit to the same village near Siem Reap, something incredible happened — we met the same children from that 2019 trip! Dorothy, with her incredible eye for detail, recognized them instantly. Seeing those familiar smiles again was pure magic — a reminder that travel creates bonds that time can’t erase.

2020–2024: The Vietnam That Wasn’t (and Then Was!)
After our Cambodia adventure, we immediately started planning a 14-day trip to North Vietnam. The timing was perfect… until 2020 happened. Like so many travelers, our plans were grounded. But Hector and Dorrie stayed optimistic — promising that when the world reopened, we’d be first on the plane together.
And sure enough, in 2024, we finally made it happen!
Well — almost.
Our dream Vietnam itinerary was perfectly designed… until Typhoon Yagi decided to make a surprise appearance. The storm washed away every plan (and quite a few roads), so we had to reroute the entire journey to the Center and South.
Did they complain? Not for a second. Instead, we embraced the chaos, turned puddles into photo ops, and laughed our way through tropical downpours. (You can see the full story — and our heroic umbrellas — in this article: Capturing Vietnam’s Beauty with an Umbrella in Hand).
Hector and Dorrie like to joke that they bring bad luck, but honestly, they bring something much better: adventure, resilience, and the best rainy-day energy imaginable.

2025: Cambodia and Laos in the Rainy Season
After Vietnam, it was time for something new and wetter (?).
In 2025, we decided to explore Cambodia and Laos together, right in the middle of the rainy season. Why? Because I wanted them to experience Cambodia at its greenest and most dramatic — and maybe tempt fate one more time.
Before they arrived, I briefly wondered if I’d made a mistake: “What if it rains the whole time?” But once again, it turned out, the rain made even more magical — dramatic skies, glowing rice fields, green Angkor Temples and soft light that made every photo sing.

This trip was packed with highlights, but two moments stood out above all:
- First, early one morning in Cambodia, Dorrie’s dream came true—she finally saw a local family collecting lily flowers. Bathed in soft, golden dawn light, the scene was serene and cinematic, so peaceful that even the humidity and mud (under her shoes) faded away. Watching her in wonder, with Hector quietly photographing the moment, reminded me why we travel: for fleeting glimpses of pure beauty.

- Second, Hector’s birthday celebration at Kuang Si Waterfall—a powerful, brown waterfall swollen from heavy rains two days earlier, surrounded by lush jungle. With nobody else around, we enjoyed birthday cake for breakfast with champagne, toasting quietly to friendship, adventure, and the perfect private moment.

Traveling Together — and What Comes Next
From the temples of Angkor to the waterfalls of Laos, every adventure with Hector and Dorrie has been a mix of laughter, detours, and beautiful surprises. They’ve become part of my travel family.

We’re already dreaming up the next adventure (and maybe a little sunshine this time!). Whether it’s back to North Vietnam, up to Kyrgyzstan, or across to Uzbekistan, one thing’s for sure: if Hector and Dorrie are on the trip, it’s going to be unforgettable.
Pack an Umbrella… and a Sense of Humor
So, if your dream vacation is all predictable sunshine and rainbows… maybe keep scrolling. But if you’re up for spontaneity, laughter, monsoon skies, and unforgettable moments, this is the kind of adventure you’ll love.
And now… Hector and I are sitting tight, knowing Dorrie really has no choice but to write her blog post about this trip. With all the chaos, beauty, and magical moments we shared, we can’t wait to see her version.
